IMirrlees, Emily Lina ('Mappie', née Moncrieff);f7 had to go to Mrs. Mirrlees from Saturday to Monday, as it was the only opportunity of seeing her before the middle of August. I was loth to go, as I have felt extreme lassitude as well, of course, as deep depression. I suppose it is partly readjustment to this climate: a half day’s work leaves me wanting to go back to bed. Iappearance (TSE's)hernia;b9deferred operation for;a2 am going in to the ‘London Clinic’ (20 Devonshire Place, W.1.) on July 17th for my operation, and shall be there for a fortnight.1 This may give me a rest. I have started trying to put my book in order in the mornings, and with the office in the afternoons, I have been ready to go to bed almost directly after dinner.

I long for somebody to talk to: but there is no one to whom I can speak; and the contrast between the outer life and the inner turmoil is such as it has never been before. Forgive me if I seem to be talking wholly about myself: but I feel at the moment that to talk of you would be an intrusion that would be unwelcome. So I only assure you that you are always in my thoughts.

The situation here shows no sign of improvement. I shall investigate the possibility of getting a little anthracite or other fuel for a stove, from the Fuel Control Office, so that I can warm my study enough to work in during the coldest period of the winter.
